WASHINGTON, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 3774, The Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum Act. Also known as the SHIP Act, this legislation would impose sanctions against entities that engage in the illicit Iranian oil trade, entities that own refineries that process Iranian oil, and entities that are included on the Treasury Department’s Specially Designated Nationals list. The legislation is led by Reps. Mike Lawler (NY-17) and Jared Moskowitz (FL-23).
“By imposing greater costs on those willing to do business with Iran, we are cutting off a critical revenue source for the Iranian regime, strangling its ability to fund destabilizing activities in the Middle East and around the globe. The SHIP Act sends a clear message that the U.S. will not tolerate the illicit trade of Iranian oil,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06). “We are proud to stand with a bipartisan group of our colleagues in defiance of an authoritarian regime that exports terrorism, violates human rights, and endangers U.S. troops and our allies.”
“The SHIP Act is a critical step in preventing Iran from continuing to fund terror across the Middle East. We are proud to see this legislation receive widespread, bipartisan support here on Capitol Hill. It's critical that we work to hold America’s foreign adversaries accountable for their actions in supporting terrorist organizations across the globe. The SHIP Act sends a clear and strong message to bad actors like China, Russia, and others - do not help Iran avoid sanctions and assist them in their funding of terror, or face the consequences. That's a message all of Congress should be able to get behind," said Representatives Moskowitz and Lawler.
The SHIP Act passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee last month with overwhelming bipartisan support. Bill text is available HERE.
