Washington, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R.1282 – the Major Richard Star Act. This legislation, introduced by Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12), would ensure combat disabled veterans receive their full benefits. Currently, only veterans who served for at least 20 years and who have a disability rating of at least 50 percent can simultaneously collect retirement pay and disability compensation.
“Over 40,000 veteran retirees whose service was cut short due to service-sustained injuries are not receiving proper compensation,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06). “Our combat-injured veterans rely on our support, and it’s our duty to honor the oath America makes to care for our servicemembers long after they come home. This legislation will help ensure combat-injured veterans receive the disability compensation and military retirement pay they deserve.”
“The coalition of bipartisan members, Veterans Service Organizations and other advocates who are committed to rectifying the injustice of concurrent receipt for more than 50,000 combat injured Veterans continues to grow,” said Congressman Bilirakis. “I will not stop fighting on their behalf until we get this measure across the finish line!”
This legislation currently has 326 cosponsors in the House of Representatives including 22 For Country Caucus members. These include Co-Chairs Congressmen Crow (CO-06) and Gonzales (TX-23), Vice Chairs Congresswomen Sherrill (NJ-11) and Miller-Meeks (IA-01), and members Houlahan (PA-06), Waltz (FL-06), Bergman (MI-01), Carbajal (CA-24), Bishop (GA-02), Golden (ME-02), Ellzey (TX-06), Davis (NC-01), Bacon (NE-02), Nunn (IA-03), Franklin (FL-18), Luttrell (TX-08), Moulton (MA-06), Jackson (NC-14), LaLota (NY-01), Panetta (CA-19), Deluzio (PA-17), and James (MI-10). The Major Richard Star Act is endorsed by leading veteran service organizations throughout the country such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wounded Warrior Project, Military Officers Association of America, and more.

Co-Chaired by Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), the bipartisan For Country Caucus provides principled military veteran members the opportunity to work together across party lines to pass thoughtful legislation in national security, veterans affairs, and national service. Since its founding in 2019, the caucus has advocated for a less polarized Congress that works for — and is trusted by — Americans.
