Washington, D.C. –The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 4627 - the Afghan Adjustment Act. This legislation, introduced by Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), would provide Afghans who supported the U.S. mission in Afghanistan with lawful permanent resident status. This legislation would address asylum system and Special Immigrant Visa backlogs and processing delays experienced by tens of thousands of Afghans who were admitted to the United States on temporary humanitarian status.
“American servicemembers who served in Afghanistan are alive today because of thousands of Afghans who supported US operations as contractors, translators, and security personnel,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06).“These brave men and women risked their lives and the safety of their loved ones, and in turn we made a promise to provide a pathway to safety in the United States. We must follow through on the promises we made to our Afghan partners.”
“As a veteran I feel it is our responsibility to honor our commitments and to never forget our Afghan allies who put their lives on the line for Americans,” said Congresswoman Miller-Meeks. “The Afghan Adjustment Act protects our Afghan allies and alleviates the logistical obstacles that our allies face when working toward a lawful pathway to permanent resident status. I urge Congress to swiftly pass it and get it signed into law."
This legislation currently has 51 cosponsors in the House of Representatives including For Country Caucus Co-Chairs Congressmen Gonzales (TX-23) and Crow (CO-06), Vice Chair Congresswoman Sherrill (NJ-11), and caucus members Congresswoman Houlahan (PA-06) and Congressmen Moulton (MA-06), Nunn (IA-03), Jackson (NC-14), Baird (IN-04), Golden (ME-02), Bergman (MI-01), Bacon (NE-02), James (MI-10), and Wenstrup (OH-02).
It is endorsed by Blue Star Families, American Legion, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Student Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Evacuate Our Allies Coalition, AfghanEvac Coalition, Afghan-American Foundation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Immigration Forum, No One Left Behind, and With Honor Action.
