Washington, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 6330 – Veterans’ Sentinel Act. This legislation, introduced by For Country Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06) and For Country Caucus Member Congressman Jake Ellzey (TX-06), aims to respond to suicide by US veterans at Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) facilities by improving the accuracy of data collection and enhancing congressional oversight.
“For too many veterans, the burdens of service and lack of resources when they return home can lead to serious and sometimes fatal mental health crises,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06). “We must continue to improve the systems that support and care for our veterans in crisis to ensure they can live safe and healthy lives.”
“Yesterday, we lost 22 veterans to suicide; today, we will lose another 22 veterans; and tomorrow, we will lose another 22, and the day after that, and the day after that. The men and women who volunteer to serve in our nation's military have sacrificed too much to allow this to continue," said Representative Ellzey. "H.R. 6330 - Veterans' Sentinel Act will stand as a beacon of hope by establishing a dedicated pilot program within the V.A.'s Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. This bill brings together the expertise of relevant V.A. offices to confront the root causes of veteran suicide head-on. We lose too many good servicemembers on the battlefield; we can't keep losing them here at home.”
The legislation creates a two-year pilot program working group within the VA's Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP) specifically focused on veteran on-campus suicide and attempted suicides, requires the VA Secretary to submit to Congress an annual report detailing on-campus veteran suicides and suicide attempts, and Directs the Comptroller General to conduct a review of the OMHSP and submit to Congress a report detailing the office's actions to prevent veteran suicide, identify challenges, and provide recommendations for improvement.
The bill is endorsed by VoteVets, Concerned Veterans for America, The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., Union Veterans Council, and Disabled American Veterans.
