Washington, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 4886 – Aviator Cancers Examination Study (ACES) Act. This legislation, introduced by For Country Caucus Members Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) and Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), aims to address the higher risk of developing prostate cancer and melanoma for fixed-wing pilots and aircrew. The legislation directs the Secretary of the VA to work with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to study the prevalence and mortality of cancer among individuals who served as active-duty aircrew in the Armed Forces.
“Ensuring our servicemembers and veterans receive the care they need for service-related health concerns remains a top priority,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06). “We must invest in understanding any links that exist between aviation and cancer in order to serve those who have served this country as pilots and aircrew.”
“As a former fighter pilot, I know first-hand the risks that airmen and women take daily when they step into the cockpit. After putting their lives on the line in defense of this country, military pilots deserve assurances that they will be taken care of and not put in undue danger,” said Representative Pfluger. “This legislation is a vital step towards protecting our service members and advocating for their health and well-being.”
“The available evidence demonstrates a link between the service of our aviators and the risk of developing certain cancers,” said Representative Panetta. “The bipartisan ACES Act would ensure that the federal government better understands this connection and takes steps to improve the care of veterans who served in these types of assignments. I was proud to co-lead this important legislation alongside Rep. August Pfluger and welcome the endorsement of our fellow veterans in the For Country Caucus as we work to bridge any gaps to prove causation and ensure the proper care for those who served and sacrificed for our nation.”
