Washington, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 5738 – the Abbey Gate Gold Star Families Dignified Transport Act. This legislation, introduced by For Country Caucus member and former Vice Chair Rep. Michael Waltz (FL-06), would address the financial burden of transport expenses faced by Gold Star families. This legislation directs the Department of Defense (DoD) to pay for servicemember remains to be transported to two locations to accommodate for a hometown funeral and a national cemetery burial. Prior to this adjustment, families could be reimbursed for travel expenses, requiring them to front the initial cost.
"The last thing grieving Gold Star families should have to worry about is ensuring their loved one receives a proper burial,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06). “When a servicemember gives their life for our country, it’s our responsibility to ensure they are cared for and have a final resting place alongside their fellow brothers and sisters in arms."
“As a combat veteran, I think we can agree that the Gold Star families of our fallen must be cared for by providing them the lifelong benefits worthy of their sacrifice upon the altar of freedom,” said Rep. Michael Waltz. “Department of Defense should pay upfront for all the costs of transporting our fallen heroes home so their families and communities can grieve and honor them before going to their final place of rest at a national cemetery. I am thrilled this bill has support of my fellow veterans in the For Country Caucus.”
This legislation currently has 10 cosponsors including For Country Caucus members Congressmen Moulton (MA-06), Bacon (NE-02), Baird (IN-04), and former Congressman and caucus member Rep. Gallagher (WI-08).

Co-Chaired by Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), the bipartisan For Country Caucus provides principled military veteran members the opportunity to work together across party lines to pass thoughtful legislation in national security, veterans affairs, and national service. Since its founding in 2019, the caucus has advocated for a less polarized Congress that works for — and is trusted by — Americans.
