Washington, D.C. – The For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of military veterans, today announced its endorsement of H.R. 8025 – the Blast Overpressure Safety Act. This legislation, introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17), addresses concerns surrounding the debilitating symptoms service members are experiencing after they are exposed to shockwaves with pressures exceeding normal atmospheric values. This legislation directs the Department of Defense (DoD) to take steps toward protecting servicemembers from blast overpressure while mitigating risks of brain injury.
"Far too many of our servicemembers are experiencing the repercussions of traumatic brain injuries sustained in the line of duty,” said For Country Caucus Co-Chairs, Congressmen Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and Jason Crow (CO-06). “We must mitigate the risks they face and protect their health to ensure they can continue to defend our nation."
“It is critical that we expand our efforts to mitigate blast overpressure as well as decrease the risk of traumatic brain injuries for servicemembers. I’m proud to have the For Country Caucus’s endorsement of my bipartisan bill with Rep. Stefanik, the Blast Overpressure Safety Act," said Rep. Ro Khanna.
The caucus’s endorsement builds on the group’s previous initiatives to improve DoD mental health services. Since its founding, the caucus has facilitated discussions focused on service member and veteran mental health including one held in June this year with the Jean Perkins Foundation during which panelists discussed increasing TBI rates.
For Country Caucus members Congresswoman Houlahan and Congressmen Waltz (FL-06), Bishop (GA-02), Moulton (MA-06), Golden (ME-02), and Panetta (CA-19) joined as original cosponsors of the resolution. Congressmen Carbajal (CA-24), Deluzio (PA-17), Nunn (IA-03), LaLota (NY-01), James (MI-10), Ellzey (TX-06), Davis (NC-01), Ryan (NY-18), Mast (FL-21), Amodei (NV-02), and caucus Co-Chair Congressman Gonzales (TX-23) signed on as cosponsors.
