October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Floor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) on Wednesday spoke on the House floor to highlight October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As a child, Congressman Gonzales spent time in domestic violence shelters after he and his mother left an abusive home.

“When I was 5 years old, I recall my mother waking me up in the middle of the night to sneak us out of our home and I remember spending time in a battered women's shelter. Looking back at it now, my mother was the bravest woman I knew then and the bravest woman I know now,” said Congressman Gonzales. “If you're in an abusive situation, you too can get out and change the direction of your life. And your children can go off and be successful because we live in the greatest country. Whether it's today, tomorrow, or a decade from now.”
