WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) secured $1,082,000 in funding for law enforcement in the FY2022 Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill.
“Over the last year, between protests across the country, the pandemic and the crisis at our southern border, our law enforcement officers have been asked to do much more than they ever have,” said Congressman Gonzales. “I am proud to have provided these funds for our hard-working men and women in blue. This funding will allow for better trained officers, better resources and ultimately, a better served community.”
Congressman Gonzales worked to secure funds for following Community Project Funding requests:
- $1 million for the San Antonio Police Department Mental Health Unit: These funds will assist in providing additional trained individuals to the Department’s Mental Health Unit, increasing coverage of the Unit through overtime and increasing training provided to Cadets in the Training Academy, active Police Officers, and other outside agencies. It will also provide funding for the Unit to provide in-state training as well as training outside of Texas.
- $82,000 for the Bexar County Sherriff’s Office Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit. Funding for this project will help animal cruelty investigations across San Antonio and Bexar County to get faster call response times for non-animal related injuries to deputies, safer conditions and a reduction in worker’s compensation claims due to injury on duty, and better care for animals by trained deputies. From 2016-2018, San Antonio received over 32,000 calls related to animal cruelty.
