WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX-23) and Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) on Thursday applauded the passage of the FY2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in the House of Representatives. The bill included a bipartisan amendment authored by Representatives Gonzales and Kelly to form a National Digital Reserve Corps comprised of civilian individuals with relevant skills and credentials to address digital, AI, and cybersecurity needs across the federal government. Members of the National Digital Reserve Corps will serve for at least 30 days per year to lend their expertise as advisors, instructors, or developers for federal executive agencies. The National Digital Reserve Corps has been endorsed by industry groups including the National Security Commission on AI, Internet Association, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, and TechNet.

“I am thrilled to see the inclusion of the National Digital Reserve Corps included in this year’s NDAA,” said Rep. Gonzales. “As we have seen from previous cyberattacks, our government currently lacks access to expertise needed to combat ransomware and bad actors. The National Digital Reserve Corps harnesses the power of private sector digital, AI, and cybersecurity experts to bolster the cybersecurity efforts of our federal government. I am grateful to see our military community and lawmakers prioritizing cybersecurity and including our amendment in this year’s NDAA.”

“Including the National Digital Reserve Corps in the FY2022 NDAA is an important step forward in preparing our national defense for the next generation of threats – cyberattacks,” said Rep. Kelly. “This innovative solution will help the federal government meet its cyber and digital security needs by bringing in new talent to assist agencies and modernize existing cybersecurity programs. Additionally, the National Digital Reserve Corps will serve as a wonderful opportunity for cyber and AI workers, allowing them to hone critical skills and further develop their careers. I look forward to this public private partnership and the increased focus and prioritization it will bring on cybersecurity for our defense community.”
