WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) last week joined 80 of his House colleagues, led by Congressman Ben Cline (VA-06), in sending a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director, Tae Johnson, demanding answers related to the Biden Administration’s policy of releasing thousands of migrants from ICE custody, known as catch and release. This letter comes in response to reports that 47,705 illegal aliens who were conditionally released from ICE custody with a Notice to Report failed to check-in with authorities between March and August of 2021.

“We have expressed concerns, many times and in various ways, with how the Biden Administration has handled their self-inflicted crisis at the border,” said the letter.“Specifically, when an illegal alien is apprehended by border officials, there are several options if the alien is not detained. In the report submitted by DHS, over 270,000 illegal aliens were disseminated into the United States with over 100,000 aliens being released with a Notice to Report (NTR) and that is just from March 21, 2021, to August 31, 2021. Over half of those given a 60-day NTR have failed to report to ICE and begin their deportation proceedings.”
