EL PASO, TX – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) toured a migrant facility in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on Monday.

“Fixing our crisis at the border needs to be a binational effort between the United States and Mexico,” said Congressman Gonzales. “I visited Ciudad Juarez to see how dire the situation is on the Mexican side as well. The families we met are more than just statistics. They are like me and you. The dangers they encounter on their journey from places like Haiti, Honduras, and Cuba are horrifying. Right now, nothing is changing, and our broken system is only encouraging more of these dangerous journeys to take place. Our nations need to be in constant dialogue at every level. This is a humanitarian crisis and it’s time for our leaders to act.”
Congressman Gonzales also visited Fort Bliss to get an update on operations, meet with Joint Task Force North, and see the new unaccompanied minor shelter being set up on base. The facility at Fort Bliss is set to receive children on March 30 and will hold 5,000 beds for unaccompanied minors who cross the border. Fort Bliss is the seventh emergency influx shelter in the U.S. to open this year, and the first of two in partnership with the Department of Defense.
“The opening of yet another unaccompanied minor facility shows just how bad this crisis really is – and it is not slowing down anytime soon,” said Congressman Gonzales. “We are seeing an unsustainable surge in families, individuals and, especially, unaccompanied children. As a father to six, it breaks my heart to see children making such a dangerous trek alone to try and have a better life. The Biden Administration needs to step in, end their open borders rhetoric, and provide our border patrol agents with the resources they need to continue doing their jobs.”
