WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) secured funding for mental health services, diabetes care and higher education research projects within Texas’s 23rd Congressional District in the FY2022 Labor and Health and Human Services (HHS) Appropriations bill.
“I am proud to have helped secure critical funding that will improve resources for mental and physical health in our communities,” said Congressman Gonzales. “Additionally, these funds will go towards preserving and researching the rich cultural and historical impact Native Americans played on both my district and Texas’ history.”
Congressman Gonzales worked to secure funds for the following Community Project Funding requests:
- $2 million for the construction of an Inpatient Psychiatric Facility in Uvalde: This funding, directed towards Hill Country MHDD Centers, will address the absence of inpatient psychiatric beds and services for a significant portion of rural Texas.
- $500,000 for the Maverick County Diabetes Access and Wellness Network (DAWN) Project: Funding for DAWN will be used to increase access to Diabetes Self-Management Education services through telehealth service expansion and through the launch of a digital Community Health Information Exchange (CHIE). Maverick County ranks in the top third of counties for diabetes prevalence in Texas.
- $1 million for the Archaeology, Anthropology and Cultural Research Center at Sul Ross State University: The funding will be used to expand efforts to research and preserve areas of historical significance in the Chihuahuan Desert. This region is known to have played a major role in the development of Native American and other societies throughout Texas and the entire southwest, including prehistoric sites which have enabled advances in the core understanding of human development.
